The Power of Praying in the Spirit (2)

1 Corinthians 14:2 (NIV) For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God… they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

I Corinthians 14:2 (AMP) … one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meanings, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].

Romans 8:26 (NIV) … the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Another powerful thing about praying in other tongues is the mysteries of the Spirit that we speak and activate in our lives as we pray in other tongues. Like our first text above says, these mysteries are secret truths and hidden thins that are not obvious to the understanding. Sometimes in our lives, we face things that seem to be beyond our human understanding and these things look mysterious to us. But the fact that something seems beyond our human understanding does not mean it is beyond the understanding of the Holy Spirit. By the Spirit, we can release God’s power and glory in ways that we could not ever ask or imagine on our own. Sometimes even into our future.

In the Living Bible, Romans 8:26-27 says, “And in the same way – by our faith – the Holy Spirit helps us with our daily problems and in our praying. For we don’t even know what we should pray for nor how to pray as we should, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with such feeling that it cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows, of course, what the Spirit is saying as he pleads for us in harmony with God’s own will”. When we are praying in tongues we are speaking the hidden wisdom of God that God has ordained for our glory, 1 Cor. 2:7. We are releasing the deep things that God has in store for us. Things that eyes have not seen, ears have not heard and minds have not imagined, 1 Cor. 2:9-10. God has given all these things to us freely and by the Spirit we know and release these things into out lives, 1 Cor. 2:12-13.
