The Power of Praying in the Spirit
Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
1 Corinthians 14:2 & 4 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; how be it in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
We studied yesterday that one way that we release the life, power, blessings and glory of God into our lives and the lives of others is through prayer. Today we shall study about how we do this through praying in the Spirit. Even though your mind is not aware of what you are saying when you are praying in tongues, you are actually blessing and edifying yourself powerfully. You must not allow anything to discourage you from praying in tongues abundantly. To edify is to construct, to build and to embolden. Jude 1:20 says, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” The Amplified Bible says, “But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit.” When we are praying in the Holy Ghost, we are not just babbling we are building up ourselves. We are constructing our lives and we are emboldening ourselves. We are making progress in the Spirit and this progress will reflect in every area of our lives. We are setting our lives on course and causing our lives to rise higher and higher like an edifice.
Our second text above also tells us that when we are praying in tongues, we are talking to God. No man talks or communes with God and remains the same. There is a rubbing off and an unleashing of the life of God in us every time that we commune with Him. Do you remember how Jesus was transfigured and light was radiating through His clothes while He was praying on the mountain, Matt. 17:2? That is what happens in your spirit every time you pray to God. Especially when you are praying in the Spirit. Believers who do not give themselves to prayer are cheating themselves out of so much of the power, blessing and the glory of God that they should be walking in.
Pray in the Spirit right now and build yourself up like an edifice. Cause your life to make progress and flight by the Spirit of God.
