Peace from Christ

February 23, 2020

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”Philippians 4:6-7

It’s amazing that the Apostle Paul penned these powerful words while he was in chains. In fact, Paul wrote this epistle while under house arrest in Rome. He tells of the peace of God guarding us while his reality was being guarded by a Roman soldier. Through personal experience, I have found that prisoners often struggle to find peace. So it is remarkable that Paul could have so much peace while bound and confined.

One day at the prison I overheard Sean praying for Dennis. Dennis’s daughter had recently turned 18 and was abruptly relocating to another state with her new boyfriend. Her decision to move troubled Dennis. So Sean prayed, using the inspired words of Scripture. “Lord, give Dennis your peace. Guard his heart and his mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.”

The peace we know in Christ does not depend on outward circumstances. You can have peace in a hospital room, in a crowded lecture hall, on a busy highway, in a jail cell. Let the peace of Christ permeate your mind and heart as you face the difficulties of life.

Philippians 4:4-23

Pray for internal and external peace. Remember that the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, brings peace to our troubled world.
