THE HELPER OF THE POOR
TEXT: ISAIAH 11:1-9
KEY VERSE: “But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked” (Isaiah 11:4).
It is easy for people to cheat the poor. This is because the poor are:
(i) Weak and helpless, and have nobody to defend them.
(ii) Not wealthy and cannot fight for their right.
(iii) Not recognized because they occupy no position of authority.
(iv) Meek and lowly, and always look up to God for help.
Children are considered the world’s most helpless, poorest and weakest people. That is why they are commonly cheated and abused.
Our Bible passage confirms and assures us of God’s desire to defend those who are cheated, neglected, oppressed and reproached because they are poor and helpless. You may be denied your right or punished for the offence you did not commit. Do not fight back, trust God.
Jesus does not only consider the poor in terms of material possession, but more so, the poor in Spirit. He considered them blessed. Meekness teaches the poor Christian to accept being cheated and leave judgment in God’s hand.
Learn to suffer the pain and the shame of persecution, and always be comforted in the fact that your Saviour and Lord is a righteous Judge who helps and defends His own. He will not leave you alone.
PRAYER: Lord, help and defend me in my hour of need.
