The Upper Room Daily Devotionals for Sunday 24th, November 2019 – Interruptions.

Hebrews 12:1-3

The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” – 1 Samuel 3:10 (NIV)

Hebrews 12:1-3

“Julia!” A voice hailed me as I emerged onto the street from the dentist’s office. My friend and I exchanged greetings. Suddenly, birds began singing. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her mobile phone. The singing stopped as she proceeded to read a text. “Is the family okay?” I asked after a moment. My friend nodded as her fingers flew over the phone keypad. After a few minutes, I gave up trying to regain her attention. “Cheerio, then,” I said and left. As I crossed the road she was still texting on her cell phone.

I suddenly thought, Is that how we are with God? On many occasions my quiet time with God has been interrupted in some way by the phone ringing, a knock at the door, family in a hurry, or suddenly remembering an item to add to the shopping list. It’s all too easy to become distracted. I’m encouraged when I remember that although our attention sometimes slips from God, God’s focus on us never wavers.

I always have God’s attention.

To spend quality time with God

Forgive us, Lord, when we let less important matters distract us from you. Help us to focus on you and cherish our time in your presence. Amen.
