GROWTH IN TRIBULATION
READ 2 THESSALONIANS 1:3–10
The church at Thessalonica was undergoing severe persecution from both Jewish and Gentile unbelievers. In spite of this, the believers were standing strong in their faith and their expectancy of the Lord’s return.
Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring (2 Thessalonians 1:4).
From the good news Timothy brought (found in 1 Thessalonians 3:6–10), Paul picked out several aspects of this church’s growth that he highly commended. Their faith was growing stronger and stronger. They had accepted the teaching of God’s Word, not as a human word, but as it actually is, the Word of God. Their love for one another was increasing as they reached out to others. They were not only steadfastly enduring their persecutions, but also using them to strengthen their resolve to stay faithful to God. These aspects were actually an answer to Paul’s prayer in 1 Thessalonians 3:10–13. Paul boasted to others about the Thessalonians’ faith, love, and perseverance.
