Daily Devotionals (24): Candid Response

This is my response to the post at:

http://realchristianity.wordpress.com/2010/10/23/of-blessings-breakthroughs-and-divine-favour/

Matters at Stake:

1. The place of tithe in today’s Christian dispensation

2. The place of Seed sowing in today’s Christian dispensation

3. You give your tithe and seed to Man and not God

Response:

Granted there are many abuses already recorded in the rank and files of ministers within the Christendom, that is not enough to justify the various unbecoming statements in the referred post (http://realchristianity.wordpress.com/2010/10/23/of-blessings-breakthroughs-and-divine-favour/). Though the Church is managed by Ministers (Men of God), it is owned by God.

Today’s Christianity is an extension of the commonwealth of Israel formerly restricted to the Israeli nation. This commonwealth were all the benefits, favors and the likes that they enjoyed by the virtue of Abrahams Covenant, the responsibilities inherent in this covenant inclusive. The doors of Christianity gained us access not only to this covenant, but also the opportunity of becoming a co-heir with Jesus Christ(John 1:12 ” but as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”)

Before we continue, Let us critically looked at the various likely funding that helped Jesus in his ministry, which the Apostles consolidated by the volition giving of the church after Pentecost. More so, when it is evident that he left his carpentry profession (a personal source of income) and went into full time ministry at the time he took off at the mature age of 30 years.

1. The Gift of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh at his birth, Matt 2:11 “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasure, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh” (money raised by giving)

2. The Great Fish Catch at the point of converting/calling of Peter and Andrew ( money raised by the power of miracle (Luke 5:4-7 “Now when he had left speaking, he said to Simon, launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake …..”)

3. The Contribution of Mary and other women to the upkeep of Jesus even till his death (free will giving: Mark 15:40-41 ” There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Jose’s, and Salome who also when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered unto him ….”, Mark 16:1-2 “And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun”)

4. Possible personal savings from his carpentry profession (personal sacrifice)

5. The various dinner invitation Jesus honored (Zacchaeus, Luke 19:5-10 “And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down for today I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully ……” Simon and others)

Beside these, the bible was very silent in any other form of income to the well coveted treasury of Jesus’ ministry through which Judas unauthorized helped himself at will. Of course, the church of 13 men (Jesus and his Apostle) is far more inexpensive to run in terms of cost and logistics than the present large numbers of churches scattered within various denominations of our time. The bottom line here is that money in needed in the ministry and there were various forms through which this money is being realized today. This money may not be raised exactly the same way like the money spent during the 3 years ministry of Jesus.

Though the church (people of God) was the direct beneficiary of these giving, God was at the center of the giving- The giving was spurred by the intention of expanding the kingdom of God. The business of the kingdom was solely that of God, we are only representatives and partners with him, the reason we were ask to occupy until he comes back ( ). In essence, one cannot undermine the offering, tithes and seed sowing utilized in:

1. Purchase of musical instruments for praise and worship to God in church services

2. Organizing of Crusade, evangelism and soul winning programs that converts sinners to God

3. Purchase of Vehicle that enhances the movement of logistics necessary for this exercises

4. Even the money spent for the upkeep of the ministers of God, where the ministry is full time is well spent.

These are all giving to God indirectly, though they were received by the church (men who are members of the body of Christ – the pastor is an eligible part of Christ). Though of all the forms of offering, the tithe has a unique peculiarity and extension (Deuteronomy 14:27-29 ” And the Levites that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee. At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithes of thine increase the same year, and shall lay it up within thy gates: And the Levites because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within they gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest”)

What many don’t understand is that in our dispensation, nobody is exempted from giving offering, paying tithe and sowing seed including the ministers of God (Pastors, etc). Any body (Pastors and members alike) that excuses him from such does so at his peril and detriment because he needs the same blessing that is accrued to givers. For a Pastor, such involvement makes his personal ministry a fertile soil for seed sowing exercise.

In fact, it is even wrong to wait for the ministers (Pastors) of God to remind us of tithe or seed sowing. It is a show of irresponsibility and insensitivity that have currently taken over the church of God today. The early church stirred by the spirit of God did more than tithing and seed sowing. Their giving was spurred to meet the entire need of the church, irrespective of who is concerned. How do you explain the situation of selling ones property and bringing it totally for the common use of the church, which then became a trend (Act 2:44-45 ” And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possession and goods, and parted them to all men as every man had need”).

It cannot be over emphasized that beyond salvation, God also promised us abundance from here and in the next. Our dominion and possession is complete from here and beyond. It is not just the spiritual only, the physical inclusive (Matt 6:33″ But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”, Matt 19:29 “And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold and shall inherit everlasting life.”).

Daily Devotionals (23): Season’s Message

Daily Devotionals (23): Season’s Message

The story of how Jesus was born in a manger has hitherto remained humiliating and haunting episode to every good thinking fellow. The lack of notice of the birth of King of Kings and the inability to provide a place of minimal comfort for his birth was the peak of indifference and carelessness of mankind. Even now many would have wished that there be a recap of such episode, at least to allow them remove this shame and play the deserved part expected of humanity. Also many could still not forgive the money barons of that time who were carried away by their business engagements that left Jesus needs unnoticed right before their noses. It is an evidence of a world full of indifference for human needs and ever ready and alert for selfish gains.

As we mourn such neglect and wished for a repeat and a second chance to do it right, the opportunity stares us right in the face every now and then because we are disposed to having the best place that the lord demands and deserves. There is no better place than our various hearts which the lord wants to be born even now. The best of hospitals, medical care and personnel will not be compared to the privacy and comfort of our hearts only if we can make them available for the baby Jesus who is ever short of a place to be born and dwell with men. The earlier error can be corrected by this singular action especially in this Christmas season.

At Christmas, we commemorate the first time ever God came to live with man in human form. It is the celebration of the beginning of God’s fulfillment of his liberation promised to mankind; a re-cap of the episode at creation when the emergence of light dispelled the ever growing darkness that envelops the earth. Again, it is the beginning of restoration foretold long ago which the people of God waited with much interest.

Suffice to say that Christmas will be incomplete without the following which are paramount with Christmas celebration:

  1. The emergence of the Light of the world
  2. Resurrection of the glory of man
  3. Restoration of Peace
  4. Reconstruction of the damage done by the devil
  5. Recovery of all that we have lost

No wonder Christmas is acronym that can be explain thus:

C – Celebration of freedom

H – Harvest of Blessing

R- Righteousness

I – Impartation of power

T- Tolerance

S- Showers of blessing

M- Merriment

A- Abundance

S- Sufficiency

Don’t allow this Christmas season to pass you by without all these. You are blessed!

Daily Devotionals (22): Wary of Dirt?

Daily Devotionals (22): Wary of Dirt?

Have you experienced walking down a dusty road that stirs the dust on air at the least provocation occasioned by the passage of vehicles or by the wind, leaving specs of dust paints all over you. It is not a different experience when walking on a rainy day. The swift movement of the heels becomes momentarily a painting brush that splashes paints of tiny dirt on ones rear, worst still when the road under such condition is infested with debris. This brings yet another awry episode to lime light. The watery mixture of such combination leave strings of colored patches arrayed in a systematic spots which quickly disappears as films of tiny dry stains after some time. The embarrassment of such stains is better imagined than experienced.

Walking quietly and cautiously usually prevent the splashes from the heels to the rear, though with much more time spent over the same walking distance. It takes a painstaking mind to take such position in order to avert the mess of dirt. This is the evidence of being wary of dirt. Of a truth the mere physical dirt may have posed a threat to our physical appearance and so receives such unwavering attention. Then, you can imagine the attention that should be given to avoid the real dirt of life.

In reality the dirt of life is SIN. The worldly environment of today is prone to quick and easy access to committing sin, still drawing inference from our former physical illustration. The average Christian is continuously lured to the temptation of various sins which are begging to be committed every now and then. It will take the same pain, care, and caution, effort to freely and continuously break away from them just as we do our due diligent to be physically clean on a daily basis.

Of course, there is some physical dirt that is inevitable no matter how hard one avoid them, they are bound to come and be, hence one gets soiled with stains and a wash is instantly needed. The spiritual wash for a Christian who is soiled is found in true confession and the resolve to avoid repetition. While physically we can be soiled by no fault of ours, spiritually it is not so. Amidst the temptation, one usually contributes to his spiritual stain. There is need for cleanliness in every aspect of ones living especially in the spirit  which has a reward of its own even here after. As a matter of fact, there is a divine responsibility that demands one to be wary of dirt.

Daily devotionals (20): The Law versus Faith

Daily devotionals (20): The Law versus Faith

Law simply connotes rules, regulation that is given and meant to be kept. In most cases such rules is meant for the decorum and easy control of the group concerned and the keepers of  such regulations do that for their good and more often than none are better for it.

The law of the lord was not given for just the purpose of observance. It has been shown that in observing the law, it is more of the issue of the mind and the head is put to action. Experience has recorded that observance of the law only may not get us the desired result God expects from us. It has to go deeper than mere law observance in form of faith. The role of faith is played deeper than the mind; it has to do with the heart. Of course any issue that connects the heart is of a serious and important matter that is not taken lightly.

This is better illustrated in a scenario where a man observes all the rules of playing a good husband to his wife; he pays the bills, carters for the upkeep of the house, gives her attention, plays with her and the kids, comes back to the house on time, kisses the wife before leaving and after arriving home, and passes pleasant comments on her looks etc. Despite all these, the husband still has a mistress out there in the town. Sure he has observed the laws that could pass him as a good husband but still does not have faith in the wife; he is not faithful. The feelings he has for her does not go beyond the mind; she is not in his heart.

Unfortunately many are entangled in such relationships illustrated in the scenario presented earlier. Such is the bane of the supposed cordial relationship God expects from his own (Christians). The relationship with our God should not stop in our minds, it should transcend to our heart where God deserves. It is our faith to God that endears us to him and not mere observance of the law. Little wonder that without faith, no man can please God.

Daily devotionals (19): The Authority of a Husband

Daily devotionals (19): The Authority of a Husband

Marriage has remained a human union with so much interest from God. Several efforts made before now to demystify it still left much to be explained. In each case, the unraveling of this mystery usually generates lots of reaction from parties concerned. One of such situations emanated in Matthew 19:1-10 that made some disciples regretted involvement in marriage. Marriage itself is not as easy as many cultures and norms present. It has far more responsibilities and bonds that could be imagined.

At the helm of affairs is the husband that takes a better part of the responsibility. The ways he goes about handling this business tells much on the over all interest and well being of the marriage and family. When handled well, every aspect of the marriage booms and soars, otherwise, they suffer immensely. This may get beyond repairs if neglected over the time.

Adam’s demonstration of self righteousness by hurriedly disassociating himself with Eve’s error is the least way to handle matters by the husband when the wife falters. He failed Eve when she needed his support most. His denial and alienation from her when it mattered most left her vulnerable to the intended wiles of the devil that tempted and lured her to sin in the first place. Unprotected and unshielded from her husband covering, she could not make a good presentation before God when she was called to book. Without her husband’s support, it was evident that failure was imminent. Unknown to Adam, that careless exercising of his authority as the husband by disowning Eve, became a mistake he has to live with all his life.

The example of relationship between Jesus Christ and the church speaks for itself (Ephesians 5:25-29). No wonder Jesus could be seen as model for husbands, hence they were advised to love their wives the way Christ loves the church. In this, it means giving the whole attention, devotion and commitment to the point of staking their life for such sake. If only Adam understood this, his approach would have been differently and possibly the penalty meted out to him would have been less severe. His sins were not disobedience alone, because he blamed God for giving him such unruly wife who lured him to sin. It further goes to say that husband has and can exhibit similar influence over their wife just as Christ did over the church.

A man that is a lawfully married to a wife has the traditional, moral and spiritual stand to challenge and correct any abnormally in the life of the wife which he is not comfortable with, irrespective of how long, where and why such ugly incident is raising its head. In fact from the point of wedlock, he takes over from the bride’s father and becomes the sole custodian of the bride; the father’s role and control over her daughter is now reduced to the barest minimum.

Where this may not be true in several norms and platforms, it is so in Christ for relationships between husbands and wives. This is the reason why God honors the utterance of the husband with respect to the wife. When she is pregnant for instance, the decree he makes for the pregnancy can prevent her from having a still birth or any birth complications through out the gestation period and delivery. His pronouncement when she is sick will go along way in putting her speedily back to her feet. His support and blessings in her various endeavor will see the success of such enterprise unlike when he cares less and show so little concern to all these. The Godly counsel and instructions he gives to the wife should not be taken with a tip of the salt; otherwise, the result can be catastrophic.

However, unfaithfulness to the marriage vows on the part of the husband can abate this authority and makes it look like a child’s play that prayers made in times of need might not be efficacious. Again, without the cooperation, understanding, docility and submissiveness of the wife, the authority of his husband will not be complete. Though, not dependent on the wife as it were, she must complement the effort of the husband for optimum performance.

Hey you husbands! As much as you can, flaunt this authority positively for the over all good of the marriage union. Stop leaving in the past! Pull up your pants and wake up to the demands of exercising your authority inherent in your headship in marriage. The enemy (ignorance) has danced so long in your territory and that is the reason your authority has not been exercised even for once.

Daily devotional (18): Power in the Spoken Word

Daily devotional (18): Power in the Spoken Word

It was not a mere matter that God out of nothing but by his word created heaven and earth. The celestial being around God who witnessed these creations exercise must have been stunned by the amount of work God achieved each day by his word. It was not until on the sixth day that God changed his procedure of creation a bit by first molding man out of the dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, before man became a living soul. Though before this sixth day creation exercise, he emphasized the nature and shape his work would take by carefully spelling out his plan that man would take after him in his image and likeness. So, in creation God inherently transferred the power of spoken words to man. The fall of man saw him loosing this power and much more to Satan, however, the victory of Jesus’ redemption restored all those losses.

As much as we are aware of this power, it can only be effective if we meant well and take it seriously in our various applications. First and foremost, much caution is expected in out utterances in manners that present our belief in the spoken words. Jesus vividly explains this in Matt 17:20 ” And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you”. What this simply means is that words spoken in faith are as good as done. The size of the mustard seed compared to our faith is symbolical in various ways. In this case, consider starting small and expect an appreciable result with time or even instantly as the case may be.

Where this is empirically applicable, it demands our demonstration of seriousness. Firstly, spoken words which require fulfillment that are practically possible within the context of our power; spoken words whose fulfillment cost us our human effort, money, time and sacrifice. When we do this consistently, we are automatically setting into motion and inviting God to partner with us in those impossibilities of our human capacity. The energy we dissipate consciously to make sincere and good promises and dare to keep them no matter the cost prepares and make room for the divine nature in man to out live the human nature to be able to do the supernatural. If we cannot handle the little things we have power over, fail to effect things within our control and could not keep the small feasible promises we make, how then do we dare to do the imaginable, the most difficult assignments and miracles by mere calling things that are not existence into reality by exercising the power we have in spoken words just by utterance.

Believers who exhibit and live with this rare power of spoken words that is result oriented have been trained and tested over and over again. They realized the need to start from within which is the first process of preparing themselves and providing the right disposition to build their faith. In this case, we are not referring to either rhema or logos. However, this does not in any way contradicts rhema or logos, but seems to help bring more of the logos we speak often into life. This is highly needed in our various daily livings in areas we may need to make effective spiritual decree. The samples provided here will go along way in guiding you:

Case 1: A victim in dream or revelation under the influence of death

Remedy 1: Genesis 2:7 “And the lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of  life; and man became a living soul”, Psalm 118:17 “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord”

Case 2: A victim in dream or revelation under condemnation

Remedy 2: Colossians 2:14 “Blotting out the hand writing of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his  cross”, John 8;10-11 “When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, neither do I condemn thee: go and sin no more”

Case 3: The spiritual influence of eating in the dream

Remedy 3: Colossians 2:16 “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holy day, or new moon, or of the Sabbath days”

Case 4: A victim in dream or revelation who incurred losses

Remedy 4: Jonah 2:10 “And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land”

Case 5:  victims under the influence of the spirit of sickness

Remedy 5: psalm 6:2-4 “Have mercy upon me, O lord; for I am weak: O lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord, how long? Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: Oh save me for thy mercies’ sake”, Ist Peter 2:24 ” …. by whose stripe ye were healed”

Case 6: A victim under the influence of stagnancy and backwardness

Remedy 6:  Deut 1:6-7 “The Lord our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates” Joshua 1:2-3 “Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.”

There are many other samples that cannot be listed here for now. However, when we understand the power in spoken words, we will be more careful in our utterances and control our tongue better. Don’t forget you have the image and likeness of God.

Daily Devotionals (17): Stop Helping God

Daily Devotionals (17): Stop Helping God

The desire to be what God has said concerning us or seeing God’s prophecy fulfilled in the lives of those close to us has been the steam or gas that sees our motor going in the midst of several obstacles. Sometimes to the point of obsession, we have misunderstood prophecy for an invitation from God to assume his place momentarily or possible stand in his place to help him do that job we feel need our help to come true. What a fallacy? The pulse to meet the image we painted out of God’s vision and revelation to get hold of the future, irrespective of how little we understand the prophecy. This is evident in our daily living and experiences which has spanned several generation.

The account in Gen 3:1-6 exposes one of such over zealousness, especially one that is devoid of knowledge which obviously amounts to foolishness. Eve on her own was desperate to work out the impression the devil has created in her mind. She could not resist the desire to be like God. Overtaken by her desire to bring to pass the enterprise of the devil, she ate the forbidden fruit. In her own understanding, God needs help to finish up the creation of man which he started. She must have thought that God sixth day creation assignment was with a fault – leaving out a vital ingredient in man’s creation. Her actions was an affirmation of the error in God’s creation to have left man half baked without inculcating the knowledge of good and bad in him. Deep in her mind, her disobedient was a way to help God.

In the same vein, Sarah could not wait for the promise of God any longer when it was evident from all human indication that her youth had failed her. At the ripe old age of 76 when she has long past menopause and because she felt that God’s promise will only come to pass if some human help is given, she looked for a short cut to actualize that promise -Providing what she thought was an easier formula for God, she ‘smartly’ gave away her maid who was still in her prime to her husband. The product of that union was Ishmael who was later sent away. Though the first son, he was not ‘the child of promise’ and was rejected as Abraham’s heir.

Again, Rebekah who God gave an insight for the plan he has for the fruit of her womb could not allow God to conclude what he had started. She became more interested than God in fulfilling the prophecy that God gave her out of his benevolence. She schemed and thwarted the effort of Isaac to bless Esau. Rather than bless Esau as Isaac planned, Jacob got the blessing. The aftermath of this episode created a gully of hatred between two brothers many years after. It took the intervention of God after Jacob had prevailed in prayer to calm the reprisal plan of Esau. Thou the hatchet was buried, they parted ways forever.

Granted, there are situations that will prompt one to take the path of the characters that have been stated earlier, however, no circumstances on ground can justify these actions. Many a time we see God forgetting his promises about us or being too slow to fulfilling them, hence, the need to deplore a plan to hasten it. All the characters earlier mentioned who tried helping God paid dearly for their mistakes, they ended up causing confusion than solving the seemingly problem at the time. This does not in any way refute the need for one to play his part in the fulfillment of his destiny and God’s prophecy for his life, however, one can be sure that his effort s ends only in his parts and God’s part should be left for him and him only. The essence of prophecy is to help guide one to see ahead of time and have the needed mindset to withstand the prevailing situations prior to the fulfillment of the prophecy, especially when such waiting demands much patience and perseverance. For one thing God does not need your help in his divine time table to complete his task. The wise saying “Do your best and leave the rest for God ” is not out of place. A line should be drawn from our best and that we should leave for God. It will be much appreciated if we stop helping God and save our selves the stress such help brings to us.

Daily Devotionals(16):Whatever He Tells You

Daily Devotionals(16):Whatever He Tells You

Sometimes when you are in need, what the lord may ask you (directly or through the Word of God) to do may seem foolish, unreasonable or too simple to yield your desired result. The Lord simply instructed that the jars be filled with water and then be drawn and given to the master of the feast. Behold water turned into wine.

In the same way, Simon Peter followed the instruction of casting his net even at a time when he knew professionally that he wouldn’t make a catch. The result was a great miracle that dumbfounded the great fisherman.

The result is always miraculous (supernatural) when you obey divine instructions irrespective of your ability, how you feel, what you know, or think. You may be at the verge of disgrace like the couple of Cana or frustrated after your toiling in life like Simon Peter but the good news is that Jesus has the simple solution to turn your situation around. All that is required of you is ABSOLUTE OBEDIENCE to whatever he tells you (Prov 3:5-7)

Daily Devotional(15):Do Not Give Up

Daily Devotional (15): Do Not Give Up

Reading: 2nd Chronicles 15:7

Giving up is an act of losing steam, quitting from a vision, desire, project, etc because of  challenges or difficulties.

The condition for a double portion of Elijah’s anoiting on Elisha was for him to see Elijah when he was taken up to heaven. It was not easy for Elisha to follow Elijah from Gilgal through Bethel, to Jericho and finally Jordan, yet he followed. He refused to lose sight of Elijah until his request was granted (2nd Kings 2:1-13).

In the same way Abraham Lincoln refused to quit business and from offering himself to serve America despite failing in business twice and eight times in elections until he was elected the president of the United States of America on the ninth attempt. Take a cue from those that resisted giving up until they succeeded. Always rely on the power of God within you to remain focused and determined no matter the distractions, discouragements, insults or mockery (Phil 1:6).

You must insist on overcoming sin, pleasing God in all that you do, fulfiling your ministry and reaching your destiny. Be strong and courageous.
